At the end of the nineteenth century, there were many thousands of dissenters in Germany who consciously practiced a way of life close to nature and founded various initiatives to achieve and support this different way of life. Many of these women and men were real pioneers and avant-garde, and many of them were active protagonists of the life reform movement. With their ideas and activities, they not only shaped an entire epoch at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, but also have a positive effect on our everyday lives with their enlightened, holistic ideas and actions to this day.
From this philosophical and spiritual environment of the life reform movement, the health food store also emerged through the initiative of the textile merchant Carl Braun. At the request of members of a Berlin naturopathic association and supporters of the first vegetarian movement, he had opened a retail store with the promising name "Gesundheits-Zentrale" in Berlin in the fall of 1887. This opening laid the foundation for the development of an entire industry. Courageous merchants with a pioneering spirit began to produce and market "alternative products" in response to the early industrial burden on the environment and people. With reformstark Martin, Reform Martin GmbH is continuing this tradition in Austria.®
